Anne Hathaway | Rihanna SNL Review

Election Night

  • Good laugh from Jason’s opening line “Darn it all to heck.”

  • Another really good laugh from Jason as Mitt sneaking a carton of milk, and the beer can sound playing was a great addition.

  • Jason is really funny in this so far, and his pronunciation of “mayo-naise” was very funny.

  • Ha, I love this running gag of Taran entering as a different Romney son, yet keeping the EXACT same look.

  • Taran: Have you been drinking? You smell like a dairy.

  • Taran, after Mitt offers him a drink: Father! I’m only 38!

  • Taran: Donald Trump is doing a very amusing thing where he’s racist…

  • Uh, I don't know how to feel about the very random ending with the “Mitt & Ann Forever” graphic.

Rating: ***½

Monologue

  • I’m LOVING Anne’s very excited energy so far.

  • Jason’s performance here is very fun so far.

  • Jason, Taran, and Cecily are GREAT singers.

  • Anne also has a surprisingly great singing voice.

  • Fun moment with Anne doing the Stefon pose.

  • Funny moment with Kenan singing about how he didn’t voice.

  • I wish I could’ve laughed at the moment with Aidy and Tim talking about how they’re not in the show much since they’re new, but considering that Cecily isn’t there with them (even though she was also new at the time) kinda shows how she had been doing much better in terms of airtime then they were.

  • When the rest of the cast walks on to sing, it honestly just feels WEIRD to see Fred here. This is a perfect example of how unnecessary, and out of place Fred was during his final few seasons.

  • Overall, this was a VERY fun monologue, with great performances from basically everyone involved.

Rating: ****

Girlfriends Talk Show

  • Aidy is very funny here so far, with her being uncomfortable with Cecily’s other friend.

  • Aidy: It looks like clothes dead women are found in.

  • Aidy saying that Skirt Warehouse is a better place to shop than Forever 21 made me burst out laughing, purely because of Aidy’s HILARIOUS delivery.

  • Aidy is basically carrying this sketch for me, because she’s giving a great performance here, and this is a great showcase of how Aidy can make a sketch with fantastic delivery alone.

  • Cecily’s weird story about her boyfriend gave me a good laugh.

  • Overall, this was a solid Aidy showcase.

Rating: ****

The Legend of Mokiki and The Sloppy Swish

  • OH YES, this pre-tape is a personal favorite of mine.

  • Kenan is giving a fun performance, and the song he’s singing is VERY catchy.

  • The Sloppy Swish is hilarious, and Mokiki doing it around NYC is really funny.

  • I love the weird details in the song about Mokiki, and his life. My favorite being that his best friend is a glove.

  • Taran as Mokiki spewing Venom at Anne was a VERY funny gross-out moment.

  • GREAT turn with Anne becoming a female version of Mokiki.

  • Overall, I loved EVERYTHING about this.

Rating: *****

Homeland

  • I’m not familiar with this show, but I’ve always LOVED this sketch, so I’m looking forward to watching it again.

  • Taran’s expression as this character is really funny.

  • The cutaways to Anne’s character were HILARIOUS.

  • Anne is giving a FANTASTIC performance in this so far.

  • Anne smiling happily at a corkboard KILLED me.

  • Bill: She’s only let me down every time I’ve trusted her.

  • Nasim’s walk-on as Brody’s daughter was really funny.

  • Anne continues to be FANTASTIC in this.

  • Kenan is a decent straight man here.

  • Bill: Let me tell you something one of my 10 rabbis once told me.

  • Funny cutaway to Anne making out with the person she’s interrogating, and Nasim walking on again was a very funny addition.

  • Overall, this was fantastic. And Anne gave an AMAZING performance.

Rating: *****

McDonald’s Firing

  • I’m getting good laughs from Bobby and Cecily’s energy so far.

  • Bobby’s delivery here is HILARIOUS.

  • Funny cutaway to Taran’s creepy smile as Andrew.

  • This is great so far, but this sketch has some noticeably weird blocking, with Bobby and Cecily yelling their insults into the camera instead of AT the people they are insulting.

  • “It’s short for Keniff, BITCH”

  • ‘Ba da ba ba ba, GO KILL YOURSELF!”

  • Some weird camera cuts are happening right now, with a camera cutting to Jay a line before it’s supposed to, and that same camera cutting to Bill while Bobby and Cecily are still saying their line.

  • Tim’s performance as Carl is really funny.

Rating: ***½

Weekend Update

  • So far, Seth’s jokes are noticeably better than the ones he told in the Russell Brand episode I reviewed.

  • Seth’s “Just the Tip” joke was pretty good.

  • Interesting to see Jay’s Obama on Update.

  • Jay’s performance as Obama here is really fun, and has a looseness to it I really enjoy.

  • Jay as Obama telling Seth to “Bounce with me” was a very funny, and memorable moment.

  • The NFL joke, about how guys with wives disagree that watching at home is better than in-person, gave me a guilty laugh.

  • Oh yeah, these Gay Couple recurring characters from Fred and Bill.

  • There’s a dumb energy to this commentary that’s working for me, and Bill’s giving a funny performance here.

  • The drinking causing brain damage joke was really good.

  • Yay, Drunk Uncle!

  • These commentaries are all basically the same, but Bobby always makes these so fun.

  • Drunkle: You know what I hoard? 1950s Playboys and DIGNITY!

  • Overall, Seth’s jokes were decent and all the commentaries were fun.

Rating: ***½

Ellen

  • Kate’s Ellen impression is always fun.

  • The goofy dancing is decent enough.

  • Cecily wanting Ellen to dance more is pretty funny.

  • Eh, I didn’t care for the cutaway to Vanessa and Nasim as Sophia Grace and Rosie.

  • The scene of the “prank” Ellen pulled was pretty funny.

  • Anne as Katie Holmes is really funny, even though I’m not really familiar with her.

  • Overall, this wasn’t really memorable, but it was decent enough, and Anne’s Katie Holmes impression was pretty memorable.

Rating: ***

American Gothic

  • Really good line from Kenan, after realizing the stereotype of Asians loving cameras is apparently true “Then again, I was 20 minutes late to work today.”

  • I love the concept of this sketch, with the story behind American Gothic.

  • I’m loving Jason and Anne’s fun performances so far.

  • The poses they’re doing are really fun, and they have great chemistry here.

  • Taran off-camera is decent as the straight man.

  • Anne bringing out a corn puppet was really funny.

  • Overall, I didn’t have too much to say about this but I really enjoyed it.

Rating: ****

Flaritin

  • Very funny first line from Bill as the spokesman reveals the funny concept to this commercial “Are you suffering from an allergy that you made up to get attention?”

  • The list of things you can pretend to be allergic to are really funny.

  • A short, but funny commercial.

Rating: ***

Thoughts

A strong episode, with a consistently fun vibe throughout. Adding to that fun vibe was Anne Hathaway, who was a fantastic host. She had such an infectious energy to all of her performances, and elevated all of the sketches she was in (Homeland, in particular). This is unfortunately (as of 2025) the last time she’s hosted. I would love for her to start hosting again, as she definitely deserves to be in the Five-Timers Club.
