12/6/25: Melissa McCarthy | Dijon

Pentagon Press Conference

  • We get a welcome return of Colin’s Pete Hegseth impression.

  • Colin is still great as Hegseth, and it feels so jarring to see Colin fully commit to a non-Update role. His run as Pete Buttigieg in Season 45 just had him basically playing himself in a wig, but here, he’s going all out in the frat boy energy and it’s great.

  • Colin doing the Dane Cook superfinger is really funny. It’s also funnier, knowing that Colin actually worked with Dane when he hosted twice back when Colin was a new writer on the show.

  • Colin making fun of the name Kelly is also funny, if you know that Colin’s middle name is actually Kelly. But I’m sure most fans don’t know that.

  • *groan* Sarah’s non-impression of Matt Gaetz returns from last season, and it’s still not funny. Also, the giggity line was just sad.

  • Sarah’s attempt to make Bowen break by staring at him failed HORRIBLY.

  • Colin briefly breaking from the audience’s groan from his previous line was pretty funny.

  • The cut to JAJ as Trump having a dream about Mamdani was pretty funny.

Monologue

  • It was later revealed that Melissa, and a number of cast members were feeling under the weather the week of this show, which explains Melissa’s slightly hoarse voice.

  • Melissa playing the “mouthhorn” was a pretty fun moment.

  • Melissa: Santa checking his lists. Naughty, Nice, and Epstein…

  • All of the snow above Melissa coming down on her was pretty funny.

  • Marcello dressed as an elf is an interesting sight, but him pushing the piano past it’s mark is pretty funny.

  • Interesting seeing Kenan appear in this, since he’s the only cast member that has been in the cast for all of her hosting stints.

  • A pretty fun monologue.

Free Sample

  • Nice to see Jeremy in a central role, considering his rough airtime so far this season.

  • I’m enjoying Melissa’s characterization here so far. And Melissa cherishing her free sample is pretty funny.

  • Melissa giving Jeremy her Mother’s ring is really funny, and sweet.

  • Melissa’s sad story about the person she considered her Mom was funny, but I felt bad for laughing about it honestly.

  • Melissa pushing Ashley’s buggy away with her baby in it is really funny, and Ashley running away screaming “OH MY GOD!” was a very memorable moment. Jeremy’s reaction to that was great. He’s been a great straightman in this sketch in general.

  • Mikey saying that Melissa’s dogs are barking at people of color is really funny, I’m loving all of the details we’re getting about Melissa’s character’s life.

  • GREAT ending with Melissa kissing Jeremy as a way to repay her kindness.

Rating: ***½

A Helping Hand

  • Interesting having a child extra be in a central role in this pre-tape.

  • Marcello punching the head of the little kid’s snowman made me laugh, but it probably shouldn’t have, haha.

  • OH MY GOD at the reveal that Melissa tied Marcello up in the little kid’s backyard, and tried getting him to throw snowballs at him.

  • Melissa’s gift for the kid and his next snowball fight being a gun is really funny.

  • I LOVE the reveal that Melissa is hiding from the police in a snowman.

UPS Delivery Driver

  • Melissa trying to leave the meeting early was pretty funny.

  • I’m enjoying the escalation of things Melissa is doing at the person’s porch that are seen on the Ring camera.

  • Melissa pretending to faint and pushing herself out of the meeting room is very funny. Mikey and Ashley’s repeating of “Donna!” is also very funny.

  • Melissa throwing a trash bag at the person’s door is really funny, and her excuse saying that she was recycling is really funny.

  • Melissa going to the restroom on the person’s porch and staying there until the nighttime is really funny.

  • Melissa: You’re gonna fire me after I’ve given this company the best 17 days of my life!?!

Weekend Update

  • I didn’t care for the edited clip of Trump’s cameo in Home Alone 2.

  • Colin: Pictures of Jeffrey Epstein’s island retreat were released, and it’s not as nice as I remember.

  • I always enjoy it whenever Colin and Che ad-lib to each other between jokes.

  • Nice to see Ben get his first Update commentary, and I like the concept of this.

  • I’m enjoying Ben’s smarmy delivery as this character.

  • Ben: From Punta Cana to Bora Bora, several places are the beach…

  • Ben’s party trick of cooking a frozen meal with his hands is pretty funny.

  • Great reveal that Ben only went to Ireland, and he got sun burnt on the plane by leaving his overhead reading light on.

  • A funny reveal that Ben got his whole body sun burnt, and shows that he wore a bikini top. It also makes it funnier if you think about Ben wearing a bikini top and sunglasses on a plane.

  • Decent ending with Ben bringing on an all redhead children’s choir.

  • Overall, a very good first commentary from Ben, and he performed well here.

  • Colin: So if you’re watching this on TikTok, DURRRRR.

  • Colin, on new Star Wars ponchos: Guaranteed to keep both you and all women dry as hell!

  • The reveal of Sarah as a drunk raccoon was pretty cringeworthy.

  • It’s a shame that Sarah’s Update commentaries have gone from fun craziness with solid writing like in her first season, to stupid stuff like this. It reminds me of how Bowen’s update commentaries have also gone downhill.

  • Sarah’s raccoon-like actions are honestly more disgusting than funny.

  • A rough way to end a weak Update, with Ben’s commentary and a couple jokes being the only highlights.

Truth or Dare

  • I’m enjoying all of the Moms’ banter so far. This has a nice slice-of-life vibe.

  • Interesting turn this takes, with Melissa daring Ashley to go to the bathroom with her and kiss.

  • The direction that this sketch is taking, with all of the Moms’ dares being sexual is pretty funny, and the realistic vibe this sketch established is giving it an absurd vibe that I kinda like.

  • Ashley: Would you like to go to the coatroom and sit on my hand?

Sunday Supper

  • Dismukes’ happiness after the hangout is over is pretty funny, and him gleefully trying to get the friends to hang out every Sunday is funny.

  • Dismukes’ reaction to the friends saying they can’t hang out every Sunday was decent.

  • A very funny reveal that Dismukes is running away from home.

  • Dismukes’ childish reaction to Bowen saying they couldn’t do Sunday Supper was funny, but something about this sketch so far has a bit of a quiet, slow-paced vibe that isn’t working for me.

  • Dismukes chugging gasoline is pretty funny, and his sentimental speech to Melissa is really funny.

  • Melissa’s speech about how she hopes Dismukes doesn’t come back was really funny, and a good way to end this.

  • Overall, this was fine but not as good as Dismukes’ many strong sketches from last season. It’s kind of disappointing how Dismukes went from having a fantastic 5th season with countless highlights, to playing man-child characters like this.

Cousin Planet

  • I love the poorly edited start this has, with the background photo behind Veronika and Jane having a Getty Images watermark on it.

  • I love the deliberate autotune in their song so far.

  • I love the absurd concept this has, with cousins living on a Cousin Planet for 360 days a year.

  • I’m also loving the costumes Jane and Veronika are wearing as the cousins.

  • Jane and Veronika’s song in this is very fun, and catchy.

Rating: ***½

Homes for the Holidays

  • Nice to see Tommy in an anchor role like this.

  • Not really caring for Bowen or Melissa’s characters here, and the decorations in their home aren’t really funny. Bowen and Melissa’s banter is pretty fun though.

  • The reveal that Melissa is a woman was pretty hacky.

  • Tommy is being given practically nothing here as the straightman, which is a shame.

  • That was it? This seemed like it could’ve gone somewhere a bit interesting, but it ends when it feels like it’s still in progress.

Rating: **

Thoughts

An okay-ish episode, but it was pretty forgettable, and there was a quiet vibe throughout the night. There was only one segment I felt highly about, and not much was even above average besides that. There wasn’t too much that was weak though so I’m more just in the middle about this one. Melissa McCarthy had fun energy, but it felt like she didn’t get many noteworthy roles. She did at least get to carry a couple of sketches in the first half (Free Sample, UPS Delivery Driver). This episode unfortunately ends the streak of good episodes we’ve had since the Miles Teller episode. Let’s hope the show can rebound with the Josh O’Connor episode.
