11/9/24: Bill Burr | mk.gee

SNL for Trump

  • Decent reveal that SNL has been in support of Trump all along.

  • We get a rare appearance from Colin outside of Update. It’s interesting to look back on, knowing he would actually make lots of appearances outside of Update near the end of this season.

  • Good laugh from Colin calling Trump “your honor”

  • Sarah ratting out the “disgusting new cast members” is really funny, and the cutaway to them shocked and confused makes it funnier.

  • Heidi, on Trump: I voted for you 50 times in Pennsylvania.

  • JAJ’s walk-on as Jacked Trump is pretty funny.

  • Dana as Elon Musk is pretty funny here.

  • Overall, a good cold open.

Rating: ***

Monologue

  • I’m really excited to rewatch this, since I remember it being one of my favorite monologues of the season.

  • I remember it being really shocking when it was announced Bill was hosting the post-election show and not Chappelle, but knowing now that Chappelle declined, it’s nice to know that Bill was the 2nd choice.

  • The bit with trying to figure out who gave you the Flu when you have it is pretty funny, and relatable. The “walk by an asian” comment, in particular, caught me off guard and it was hilarious. The audience isn’t really giving much, though.

  • The bit with a guy who didn’t wear socks and shoes on the airplane was really funny. The “God made that guy” comment was also really funny.

  • Bill: Ladies, you're 0 and 2 against this guy!

  • The “enough with the pantsuit” bit and how you gotta “Whore it up a little” is hilarious. The audience seems thrown off by this, but that honestly made it funnier for me.

  • Bill talking about how Trump seemed “truly happy” when he went to McDonald’s is hilarious.

  • Overall, I thought this was fantastic. I’m sure that other people really don’t care for this Monologue, and Bill Burr, in general. But I loved this.

Rating: ****½

Rorschach Test

  • Fitting casting of Bill as a tough firefighter.

  • OH MY GOD at the reveal of Bill’s rorschach being Mike Wazowski in lingerie. Bill’s description of the photo is so dumb that it’s working for me.

  • The rorschach photos that Bill is describing are so dumb that they are funny. Bill is really helping this material. His descriptions of the photos are really funny.

  • Overall, this was so dumb, but Bill made it work for me.

Rating: ***

Buffalo Wild Wings

  • We get a sequel to the Sam Adams pre-tape from Bill’s first hosting stint. I’m not as high on that one as others are, but I still think it’s solid, and I wonder if this sequel will still work for me on rewatch.

  • Ha, Bill’s still has the cast on his arm from the first pre-tape, funny detail.

  • Bill: I’m here cause my wife said I bring tension to the house.

  • Bill saying to Mikey’s daughter “Your father is a douchebag” is really funny.

  • Good laugh from the “Real Patriots Fans” text appearing while Bill and Mikey fight each other.

  • Great moment with Mikey leaving, then coming back after forgetting his daughter. Bill saying “Father of the Year” was a great addition.

Rating: ***½

The Best of Snake Skin

  • Funny concept with a “Sex Rock” band named Snake Skin. The first cutaway to JAJ, Sarah, and Dismukes as the band is really funny.

  • I don’t have much to say about this, but I’m really enjoying this. Bill trying to convince Emil the band is good is really funny.

  • Great moment with the seemingly serious message from Dismukes turns into another Sex Rock song.

  • Overall, I didn’t say much, but I thought this was very fun.

Rating: ***½

The Janitor

  • Nice to see lots of Emil so far in this episode.

  • Funny walk-on from Dismukes as Longfellow’s boss.

  • Bill walking in and slipping on the throw up is really funny.

  • Bill and Dismukes yelling at Longfellow is really funny.

  • Longfellow revealing he tried to clean the throw up with a Roomba was a great reveal.

  • Kenan whooping Longfellow with a belt after stepping in the throw up was hilarious.

  • JAJ’s walk on seems to be a reference to a movie I’m not familiar with. The reveal that he lives in the supply closet he walked out of was pretty funny.

Rating: ***½

Calling Dad

  • Interesting pairing of Devon and Dismukes (who’s been getting lots of airtime, along with Emil)

  • Kenan struggling to talk about himself is pretty funny, and the piano music in the back adds to the humor.

  • Bill hanging up right after Andrew called is really funny.

  • Bill struggling too is funny. I’m enjoying the slice of life vibe this sketch has.

  • Kenan expressing himself by calling himself “The Eagles” is really funny, and Bill expressing himself through cars is great too.

  • Kenan: The Eagles fell in the shower.

  • Bill: Last week, the doctor found some polyps in my car’s ass.

  • Overall, a very sweet slice of life sketch.

Rating: ****

Weekend Update

  • It’ll be interesting to rewatch this.

  • Ha, Drinkin’ Che is back.

  • Colin’s joke about Trump saying America is in a golden age was brutal.

  • Che: That’s it! I’m listening to R. Kelly again!

  • Nice to see an Ego commentary, she usually kills on Update (her commentary in the Ariana Grande episode notwithstanding).

  • The increasingly absurd things she’s finding in her bag is really funny. Her ballot in particular, was really funny “And I’m registered in Pennsylvania".

  • Colin, to Ego: Girl, please…

  • Ego revealing she was looking for another purse the whole time was a great reveal.

  • Overall, the usual great Ego commentary, and a nice rebound from her last visit to the desk.

  • Great Dunkin’ joke from Colin.

  • Another good joke from Colin with the Gladiator 2, and Wicked combo being called “Glad-dicked”

  • Eh, Che said “It’s the 90s” again. Maybe he should just stick with Drinkin’ Che all the time.

  • Great joke from Che about the “You’ve got mail” guy passing away.

  • Nice to see Kenan’s Willie character.

  • The usual great, dark material from this character, with Kenan keeping a big smile, and optimistic tone. I’m not gonna have much to say about this.

  • Willie: My uncle used to say to me “Drop your jeans, Willie. I need a good laugh!”

  • Che and Kenan have the usual great chemistry here.

  • Great reveal that Kenan doesn’t support dog fighting, BUT he supports fighting dogs.

  • Kenan seems a bit giggly here, but this is still working for me.

  • Overall, a solid Update, and the best of the season so far.

Rating: ****

Bald Men

  • I remember really not caring for this sketch when this episode aired, but after seeing other people’s high feelings, I’ll go into this with an open mind.

  • Funny reveal that everyone in the restaurant that Mikey and Sarah are at, are bald.

  • The song that they are singing is pretty funny. And Bill’s solo is good.

  • There are some good lines in this gospel section “Our heads look like the tip of a giant thumb” “Our favorite fruit is canteloupe”.

  • Overall, this was a lot better than I remember it being, but I still think this is a bit overrated.

Rating: ***

Trauma Support Group

  • Hilarious casting of Bill as a Trauma Support Group counselor.

  • Bowen’s trauma being light problems is pretty funny, but Bowen’s performance is borderlining on annoying for me.

  • Bill’s defense of Bowen is really funny.

  • This is getting better for me, with Bowen remembering that he got logged off of his Tubi account, right after Emil was grieving about his dead mother.

  • Bowen’s constant interrupting of Ashley is pretty funny.

  • Bowen putting his cigarette out on Ashley’s knee is pretty funny, and Ashley’s scream made Bowen break pretty hard. It’s impressive that a newbie was able to break a veteran like that.

  • Bowen telling Ashley to shut up honestly made me laugh way harder than it probably should have.

  • Overall, this was a pretty good sketch.

Rating: ***

I Got One

  • Nice to see Ashley get a bit to do, between the Trauma Support Group sketch, and this.

  • Ashley’s long-winded, and unfunny joke, and the others' reactions were pretty funny.

  • Ashley saying the exact same joke twice was pretty funny, and the cuts to Bowen and Kenan were pretty funny.

  • Ashley is giving a great performance here, this must’ve been something she performed at the Groundlings.

  • Overall, a good 10-to-1, and a great showcase for Ashley Padilla.

Rating: ***½

Thoughts

A consistently good episode. Literally everything in this episode worked for me (which will make the rating higher than how I actually feel), and Bill Burr was a great host. Not much else to say honestly.
